Uthaya Sankar case: Court rejects four-day remand application, author to be freed today

THE Magistrate Court dismissed the police’s application to remand author Uthaya Sankar SB for four days in a hearing today.

“Instead, the police only allowed for a day remand, which means he will be released at 6pm today,” Uthaya Sankar’s counsel Rajsurian Pillai told FocusM.

The case was presided by judge Sharifah Muhaymin Abd Khalid and the application for remand was heard at the Dang Wangi police district headquarters lock up.

Yesterday, Uthaya Sankar was detained at his home in Sri Muda Shah Alam for allegedly posting a comment deemed as insulting Prophet Muhammad on April 7.

He was said to have published the post following artiste Iman Zulkarnain’s comments on the media, where the latter had expressed regret for pracitising polygamy as he could not be fair to his wives.

Bukit Aman criminal investigation department (CID) chief Datuk Seri Abd Jalil Hassan confirmed the arrest yesterday, adding Uthaya Sankar was being investigated under Section 298A of the Penal Code for creating public mischief and Section 233 of the Multimedia and Communications Act for improper use of network services. – April 12, 2022
