War in Ukraine: Netizens pan UN’s Guterres for alleged double standards

WITH the war in Ukraine coming to its third week, United Nations (UN) secretary general Antonio Guterres took to social media to decry the war in Ukraine and urged Russia to put a stop to it.

“More than 3 million Ukrainian refugees have fled their country. The people of Ukraine desperately need peace. And the people around the world demand it.

“Russia must stop this war now,” he said.

While Guterres’ call seems reasonable and justified, several netizens pointed out the hypocrisy of the matter, given that there are other countries also going on strife but claimed it received little attention from the UN official.

Echoing Yeha’s concerns, user Allawi Ssemanda added:

On that note, netizen Khan BA mocked Guterres by stating:

Three weeks ago, Russian president Vladimir Putin launched an invasion of Ukraine. While he had claimed the war was to “de-Nazify” the country, it was speculated that the attack was launched due to its Volodymyr Zelenskiy’s plan to join the North-Atlantic Treat Organisation (NATO).

Putin has been wary over NATO’s expansion to East Europe and had urged Zelenskiy to drop plans to join the defence pact as both nations share borders which each other and have deep culture ties with Russia.

Selective sympathy?

Million of Ukrainians have displaced due to war and many European countries have welcome the refugees with open arms.

However, many people have pointed out the hypocrisy among Europeans welcoming Ukrainians to their lands but were extremely rigid when it came to refugees from North Africa and Middle Eastern countries.

On that note, user Sulamit urged UN to do more for Yemenis, Iraqis and Afghans who are suffering due to the “economic war” perpetrated by the US.

Netizen Ayepa retorted: “Iraqis needed peace and no one said a thing, Libyans needed peace and no one said a thing, Syria is still at war and no one seems to be bothered, WHY ARE WE SELECTIVE? Let Russia take back its old territory.” – March 17, 2022
