We can’t just sit and watch while the country burns, Tok Mat says

FOLLOWING Umno’s decision to retract support for Prime Minister Tan Sri Mahiaddin Yassin, the party defended the decision by saying it was time to make a stand for public interest.

“The health system is getting worse, the economy deteriorating, poverty increasing, suicide cases going up and people are going hungry.

“People are raising white flags, black flags and others. Democracy is disregarded and our monarchs are being sidestepped.

“Umno can no longer be part of this. Our party must stand with the people, not power and positions,” said its deputy president Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan, in a Facebook post.

Yesterday, Prime Minister Tan Sri Mahiaddin Yassin confirmed an on-going speculation for months by appointing Senior Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob from Umno to become deputy prime minister.

He also promoted Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein of Umno to the rank of senior minister.

Umno moving forward

Though both are from Umno, it was claimed that the duo were in friendly terms with the prime minister and Perikatan.

However, Umno president Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi pulled the rug under Mahiaddin’s feet hours later by announcing that the party, with the blessings of its supreme council, was retracting support for the premier and called for his resignation.

On that note, Mohamad Hasan reminded party members that no individual was above Umno, adding that they must always prioritise the people’s wellbeing at all times.

“There is no struggle more meaningful than working for the rakyat and the downtrodden. To Umno members, I say that we will not stray from our aspirations to protect the people, country and party.

“God willing, Umno has a stand and ideas to move forward. Hopefully this planned road is the best way for the people, country and our beloved party,” he remarked. – July 8, 2021.
