MANY Malaysians know that the 16th General Election (16GE) will be held next year. The bigger question is when it will be held, since the election dates are not fixed like in the United States.
Former deputy minister and political analyst, Dr Ong Kian Ming predicted that Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim would likely want to wait after the SEA Games
The 34th SEA Games would be held from Sept 18 to 29,2027.
The former DAP lawmaker pointed out that Malaysia’s outstanding performance can provide a favourable feel-good factor to dissolve the Dewan Rakyat.
Ideally, post-August would be a good period for general elections. However since the SEA Games is in September 2027, Anwar would very likely wait until after the SEA Games.
By comparison, Ong highlighted that former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak failed to capitalise on Malaysia’s outstanding performance in the 29th SEA Games held in 2017. Najib’s decision cost him his election.
Ong is a co-host of Are We OK? podcast along with another popular podcaster Peter Yong. Both spoke in the 109th episode of the show.
Yong, better known as Mr Money, predicted that the government is currently considering the Hari Raya Aidilfitri period to call for the polls.
Aidilfitri is most likely to take place in March 2027
Yong predicted March 2027 as people would have felt the benefits of Budget 2027 by that period.
Ong agreed with Yong because the longer one waits, the more things can go wrong.
“But then again, Prime Minister Anwar’s thinking is that he wants to be in power for as long as possible.
Ong who quit the DAP on Malaysia’s Independence Day in August predicted the two state polls – Johor and Negeri Sembilan accurately. Both the elections saw the Anwar – led coalition – Pakatan Harapan defeated. – Oct 28, 2026
