VOITH Hydro GmbH & Co KG, a leading German manufacturer and full-line supplier for hydropower plants and relevant engineering services, has teamed up with Widad Business Group Sdn Bhd (WBG) as its local partner to actively seek and bid for hydro projects.
WBG is a well-diversified conglomerate focusing mainly on construction, integrated facility management (IFM), property development and information and communications technology (ICT) services.
WBG has an extensive track record of more than 20 years in construction, IFM and ICT services via its listed entity Widad Group Bhd and Dataprep Holdings Bhd.
To formalise the partnership, Voith Hydro has inked a memorandum of collaboration (MOC) with WBG for the purpose of establishing their intention to jointly seek and bid for hydro projects in Malaysia.
To-date, Voith Hydro has developed customised, long-term solutions and services for large- and small- power plants in more than 30 locations in 24 countries.
It is estimated that a quarter of the energy generated worldwide from hydropower is produced with turbines and generators from Voith Hydro.
More than 50% of the peninsular hydropower plant capacity has been provided by Voith – namely in schemes at Sungai Perak or Cameron Highlands – according to Voith Hydro’s head of sales and proposal (service & upgrade) Markus Kaufmann.
“The ASEAN region and hydropower market is important to us, and we would like to increase our presence here by providing high technological expertise which has been our trademark for 150 years.
“To turn this into a success, we felt that there was a need to collaborate with a partner that complements Voith Hydro’s solutions, services and experience, and can help to open up more doors of opportunities locally.
“WBG fills in this gap perfectly with its track record in relevant industries and sizeable past projects in both the public and private sector,” Kaufmann pointed out.
WBG had recently announced RM40.0 bil estimated gross development value for its maiden integrated development project known as “The Widad @ Langkasuka” in Langkawi. This project alone will keep the group busy for the next 15 to 20 years. – Feb 16, 2021
