Zambry: UMNO Youth exit call must go through Supreme Council

BN SECRETARY-GENERAL Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abd Kadir has clarified that UMNO Youth’s call for the party to withdraw from the Unity Government cannot be acted upon immediately and must first be decided by UMNO’s Supreme Working Council (MKT).

As an MKT member himself, Zambry stressed that while grassroots sentiments and demands are important, UMNO Youth leaders understand the need to handle such matters with maturity.

Commenting on UMNO Youth leader Dr Akmal Saleh’s call for an exit from the Madani Government, Zambry said, “That is merely the view of the Youth wing. As mentioned by the Youth Chief yesterday, any such views will be submitted to the Supreme Council.”

“In this context as well, as we have heard, despite the pressure being exerted, brother Mohamad Akmal is aware that the final decision will ultimately rest with the UMNO Supreme Council,” he added.

Zambry was speaking to reporters after the Back-to-School Programme with the Higher Education Minister at Dewan Merdeka, Manjung Municipal Council, on Sunday.

Meanwhile, Pasir Gudang Member of Parliament Hassan Abdul Karim has urged UMNO Youth to focus on eradicating corruption within the party’s leadership in order to restore its integrity and strength, likening this effort to UMNO’s cleaner early days.

He warned that it would be a serious mistake for the youth wing to defend UMNO leaders implicated in, and convicted over, the 1MDB scandal ahead of the upcoming general election.

Defending such figures, he argued, would betray the national interest, given the scandal’s massive debt burden amounting to tens of billions of ringgit that future generations will have to bear.

Achieving even half the goal of revitalising UMNO, he added, depends on the youth wing leading this anti-corruption drive.

Zambry stresses that UMNO Youth’s call to withdraw from the Unity Government must be formally discussed in the Supreme Working Council in line with the party’s decision-making structure. —Jan 4, 2025
