“Kudos for revealing insolvent politician on DBKL Board but what about 1MDB?”

KEPONG MP Lim Lip Eng has applauded MIC for its role in exposing the appointment of an insolvent politician to a Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) board, saying that although the individual involved is from the government bloc, MIC had acted fairly and transparently in its judgement.

However, Lim questioned the party’s continuous silence over the 1MDB financial scandal which he said had tarnished Malaysia’s image in the eyes of the world.

“I am very pleased that MIC had exposed [this matter] but the people are still wondering why MIC had kept mum on the 1MDB corruption case involving former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak despite the fact that the scandal had tarnished the country’s image,” Lim said in a statement.

“In the case of DBKL appointing a bankrupt politician to the ELBKL, I stand with MIC in urging DBKL to come clean over this matter and to cancel [the individual’s] appointment [as board member]. I, too, want an answer on how the individual passed DBKL’s screening and be appointed as a board member.”

Yesterday (Aug 3) MIC had demanded an explanation from DBKL on the appointment of an insolvent individual to the Excise Licensing Board of the Federal Territory of Kuala Lumpur (ELBKL).

Federal Territories MIC deputy chairperson D. Pala Kumaran said the individual is also a divisional chief of Bersatu’s associate wing.

Pala Kumaran told news portal Malaysiakini that their search at the Malaysian Department of Insolvency had revealed that the 46-year-old was declared bankrupt on Jan 7, 2021.

However, he was appointed as a member of ELBKL in October last year.

A search by Malaysiakini on Monday (Aug 1) at the Insolvency Department indicated that the individual had not been removed from the bankrupt list.

When contacted by the news portal, DBKL Licensing and Hawker Development Department director Khairul Anuar Mhd Juri said the City Hall has taken note of the matter and assured that they will run a check.

Meanwhile, Pala Kumaran, who is also the MIC Batu division chief, announced that his party planned to lodge a police report against the individual.

“We believe he has submitted false and fraudulent documents to be appointed as a board member. We will probably lodge a report to enable a police investigation,” he said. – Aug 4, 2022
