SNOW fall in the tropics … Dragons flying through the skies … And a giant oil lamp …
That seems to be the observation of some netizens over the quality of festive decorations at KLCC. With the fasting month of Ramadan having just begun, some netizens were somewhat disappointed by the lacklustre Raya decorations at the city’s premier shopping destination.
Comparing the single giant oil lamp with the décor for Christmas and Chinese New Year (CNY), some netizens felt that it was a poor showing from the KLCC management.
What in the disappointment of a raya decor is this? pic.twitter.com/puRCUZ2Q58

The issue was first highlighted in a simple post by user @SMQotaddah on X (Formerly Twitter). His lament has since generated 1.8 million views and plenty of comments at the time of writing.
This is a sample of what is being said.
Some netizens even wondered what the décor is supposed to represent with few suggesting it looked more like a poorly-constructed space craft.
Some lay the blame at amateurishness of those involved in putting up the décor.
Many very pointedly remarked the Raya décor was seriously lacking compared to the CNY dragon and giant Christmas tree decors at the same mall.
Of course, with a post such as this racial polemics are bound to surface.
Another netizen echoed @SMQuotaddah’s sentiments when pointing out that KLCC management has plenty of Malay representation. The query should be posed to them instead of blaming other races for this fiasco.
Some cheekily suggested that this was due to a lack of budget or that it was completely used up for previous festive celebrations.
There were some suggestions as to what could have been erected as Raya décor.
It is indeed perplexing that KLCC did not see fit to put in more effort for Eid given the lavish décor for other celebrations. It is only to be expected that there is blowback with many feeling slighted over the perceived lack of effort from KLCC management.
However, one netizen really hit the nail on the head by pointing out the misplaced priorities – why all the fuss when the country is filled with beautiful mosques? Is it not better to be spending time at these places of worship during Ramadan rather than traipsing in shopping malls?
