Circumcision device goes viral for burning right through the flesh

ALTHOUGH circumcision is as much a part of growing up, its association with fear and pain has never changed over the centuries.

It conjures intimidating images of knives and crying children, and more crying children.

But now with the advent of advanced technology, does circumcision have to be as frightening as what was experienced by the older generation? The answer is a resounding yes.

In a viral video on X by netizen Abang aji, a medical officer could be seen demonstrating a laser cauterising device claimed to be used for circumcision. Frighteningly, it cuts right into the meat like a hot knife through butter.

However, netizens were quick to point out the misinformation in the video. According to Ana Ahniar, the instrument displayed was not a laser but an electric cauteriser.

Another netizen claimed that the tool was used for facial treatment too. “It doesn’t look like a laser, but more like a tool to cut polystyrene,” said Silica Ch.

Also, several netizens claimed that either they or their children had been subjected to the device, and there was a strong smell of meat burning after the surgery.

Then there was Norhisyam Hasim who highlighted the disparity between the technology used by the people in the village and the city.

Observing the crude-looking knives to the left, for once we do feel lucky to live in the city. Also, it is highly unlikely the surgeons in the village do not have access to any form of anesthetics.

On another note, the National Cancer Institute revealed that electric cauterisation is a procedure that uses heat from an electric current to destroy abnormal tissue, such as a tumor or lesion.

It may also be used to control bleeding during surgery or after an injury. The electric current passes through an electrode that is placed on or near the tissue.

The tip of the electrode is heated by the electric current to burn or destroy the tissue. Now that we know how it works, does it reduce the fear factor by any amount? Not even a bit. —Feb 10, 2025
