Couple finds stranger’s debit card in e-hailing vehicle and goes on shopping spree, blames victim for being careless

“WE did not steal the debit card; we found it.”

Such were the words of a couple who recently drew flak online when they found a debit card in an e-hailing vehicle and, instead of turning the card over to the authorities, decided to go on a two-day shopping spree.

A netizen took to Facebook to share the mind-boggling tale, explaining how she had realised that her bank card had gone missing on Feb 5 when she was checking her account balance and discovered several unauthorised transactions.

Yong Sofia had promptly terminated her card and lodged a police report, and had even returned to the last store she had used her card to ask if anyone had found her card.

“The couple right here stole my debit card and went for a shopping spree for two days in a row,” Yong Sofia Yusof wrote in a post on the JB TRACER II : Johor Bahru Traffic, Crime & Community Service Report 2 Facebook page that had since gone viral.

“The damage is to be estimated around RM400. The police report was done, and CCTV footage was obtained based on the transaction time.

“I have never switched on any notifications (my bad) as this card is only being used for makan-makan monthly, and it is not my primary card.

“Whichever it is, using someone else’s card without the owner’s authorisation is still wrong, no matter how you found that card, NO CAPS.”

“I didn’t steal the card”

A woman had since reached out to the victim via Facebook Messenger to confess that she was the one who had taken the card, which she said she and her partner found on an e-hailing vehicle.

“I have two young children, and I don’t want this matter to go viral and so we will pay you back all the money (that we have spent). We also ask that you take down the videos and CCTV footages,” the woman said.

A quick check at the comments section revealed that the woman had attempted to reach out to Yong Sofia to let her know that they had returned her money.

What was unexpected, however, was the woman pointing fingers at Yong Sofia for her own carelessness.

“I have made the deal with this person. If I returned her money she will remove this post. And one more thing, I did not steal the card, we just found it. So this is about the woman being careless,” the woman said.

“If we had really meant to steal, we would have taken her IC and her handbag as well. It’s true we are at fault here, but the deal was that if we paid her back she will take down the post. If not we will also lodge a report.”

(Editor’s note: The woman had since reached out to notify Yong Sofia that she had returned the money. Taking to TikTok, the woman revealed screenshots of her efforts to get in touch with the victim, alongside an ATM receipt of the transaction).
