Police arrest murder suspect in high-profile case that caught the Pahang Sultan’s attention

POLICE have arrested a 53-year-old man suspected of murdering food vendor Norshamira Zainal, 37, whose body was found near the Kuantan River by the Tanjung Lumpur Bridge last Thursday (Feb 13).

The suspect was apprehended at 5.30am on Saturday at a house in Wakaf Tembesu, Gong Badak, Kuala Terengganu, by a team from the Criminal Investigation Department of Pahang and Terengganu.

Following the arrest, police seized a ring, cash, clothing and documents as evidence. A remand application for the suspect will be made at the Kuantan Magistrate’s Court.

District Police Chief ACP Wan Mohd Zahari Wan Busu confirmed that the case has been successfully solved and thanked the public for their assistance in the investigation.

The Pahang Sultan Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah earlier called for the swift arrest of the suspect in the murder of a 37-year-old eCommerce seller found near the Tanjung Lumpur Bridge.

His Majesty also stated that if convicted, the suspect should receive appropriate punishment, calling the act “cruel and inhumane” in a statement on the Pahang Sultanate’s Facebook page.

Earlier, the Sultan visited the victim’s family at the Forensic Unit of Tengku Ampuan Afzan Hospital, accompanied by Tengku Ampuan Pahang Tunku Azizah Aminah Maimunah Iskandariah and Tengku Mahkota Pahang Tengku Hassanal Ibrahim Alam Shah.

Mohammad Afiq Akhmal Nudin, the 31-year-old husband of the victim, shared that his wife ran a chili paste business while he worked at a factory in Inderapura. They had been married for five years and have a five-year-old son.

His wife typically prepared orders from Wednesday (Feb 12) to Friday (Feb 14) and personally delivered them. On Wednesday evening, she left home and called him around 7.30pm, saying, “I’ll be back around 10.30pm.”

The next morning, at 5am, he realised she hadn’t returned and alerted his father-in-law before searching for her with friends. They found her car near the Tanjung Lumpur Bridge, and soon after, his friend discovered her body by the river. — Feb 15, 2025
