Detractors far from giving up whacking Anthony Loke over his backdoor President Xi diplomacy antic

CHINESE president Xi Jinping who could well be the top two most powerful world leader today has come and left after a landmark three-day state visit at the invitation of His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, King of Malaysia yet the political impact of his presence can still be felt more than a week after he departed the Malaysian soil.

This follows allegations of his backdoor diplomacy antic purportedly fuelled by MCA amoi cybertroopers who trained their guns on Transport Minister Anthony Loke Siew Fook over his dragon Royal Selangor pewter plaque souvenir to commemorate Xi’s historic visit to Malaysia.

Even as the DAP secretary-general who was made the Minister in Attendance during Xi’s visit from April 15 to 17 has insisted that the souvenir was a personal gift and “I never said it was from the government”, the detractors are turning a molehill into a mountain to attack Loke who is known to be an ‘arch-enemy’ to MCA.

The brouhaha started soon after Deputy Communications Minister Teo Nie Ching uploaded a video of Loke presenting the souvenir to Xi in what seems to be the ‘backdoor’ of the KLIA airport prior to the Chinese president’s departure to Cambodia.

“Anthony Loke represented DAP to present a momento plaque to CCP General Secretary (Xi),” penned Teo who is also the DAP’s national vice-chairman in her social media post.

Loke had in his own FB post mentioned that the “token of appreciation” in the form of a Royal Selangor pewter plaque engraved with the image of a dragon which symbolises strength, wisdom and friendship in the Chinese culture is intended to mark Xi’s historic visit to Malaysia.

Cybertroopers deserve award

Petty or otherwise, the tri-lingual trolling of Loke seems to be well-scripted nonetheless.

TikToker @.spikachu who fronted the English version harped on the pathetic backdoor venue when Xi “merits a far more ceremonious and classier ambience”.

“Where is the red carpet?  … And most importantly where’s the Malaysian PM?” she decried. “The dragon-engraved pewter is rumoured to be priced around RM1,500 which is barely the price for a high-end dinner at a six-star restaurant.”

“At the very list, a visit by the Chinese president should follow proper diplomatic protocol led by the PM … It’s not about the money but the gesture, respect, dignity of how we represent ourselves.”

TikToker @ivonelow who lectured Loke in the Malay version offered nuances of a political attack on Loke/DAP when she lamented that the “the photos and videos are not from national media but DAP’s mouthpiece, Rocket News”.

“Hello YB, this is a state visit, not DAP’s reunion with the China Communist Party (CCP) … If follow protocol, the person who is qualified to present the souvenir is either the PM or YDPA (Yang di-Pertuan Agong),” she teased.

“But DAP seized the moment to give away a gift … Some time back, it was a comic from an anti-China extremist and now it’s a pewter from the backdoor. What’s next? Lucky draw tickets? That Malaysians have been humiliated is one matter (but) now PMX also gets humiliated alive.”

Finally, self-proclaimed rational analyst and TikToker @insightkaka highlighted four flaws from Loke’s action in her Mandarin version trolling:

  • Firstly, Teo should not have uploaded the video of Loke presenting the souvenir to President Xi for that action was done without Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s knowledge or even sanctioned by Wisma Putra;
  • Secondly, Loke claimed in the video that he was representing Malaysians to present the souvenir to the CCP chairman when the position has been abolished since 1982 (the right designation is party general secretary and president of China);
  • Thirdly, Loke had his interest mixed up given he claimed to be representing Malaysians but the gift states party position; and
  • Fourthly, Loke’s action insinuates submission to the authority of the guest country given that the five-claw dragon signifies the power of an emperor in the Chinese culture.

No matter how well-researched or convincing the content of the three female influencers are, they smack of a systematic ploy to undermine Loke at all cost by reaching out to Malaysians at large (judging by the trilingual strategy deployed).

Even then, one truly wonders what would the success rate be like from the trilingual charade fronted by charming female cybertroopers? – April 25, 2025
