A cause célèbre is a controversial event or hot topic that gets a lot of public attention. People often argue about it or talk about it in the news.
The latest cause célèbre is Rocky– an unfortunate canine that met its demise at the hands of over-zealous dog-catchers in Port Klang.
The public is shocked over allegation that the dog was beaten, strangled and dragged to death by a group of local men and youths during an enforcement operation in Taman Teluk Gedung Indah, Port Klang on Wednesday night (July 29).
What was especially shocking to the Malaysian public was that Rocky’s owner was at the scene and had pleaded for her pet to be released. Amid the commotion, the hapless canine died.
There have been plenty of outrage with citizens demanding justice for the slain canine with many shocked at the force used by the dog-catchers.
The issue is further muddied by the presence of “volunteers” in the operation, one of whom is alleged to be responsible for the reprehensible act.
This was highlighted by popular personal branding coach Jordan Lim who plastered picture of the alleged perpetrator on Facebook.
Demanding justice for slain canine, the co-founder of Hey Food Malaysia argued that he doesn’t usually post faces of people but he had to make an exception in this case.
Asking netizens to viral the image, the media entrepreneur demanded action and for the authorities to conduct a thorough investigation into the incident.
“If the punishment is not strong enough, how many more Rockys have to suffer before people take animal cruelty seriously? Rocky deserves justice,” he concluded.
The post has generated 13.2K likes, 3K comments and 4.6K shares, denoting that Rocky’s case is very much at the forefront of Malaysians’ collective consciousness.
However, not everyone was in agreement with the poster or the overwhelming public sentiment against the supposed heavy-handedness of the dog-catchers.
Amid all the cries for justice and hashtags, there were those who felt that dog owners must be more responsible by keeping their pets in check at all times.
There were those who felt that responsible dog owners would NOT have let their pets roam free.
Rocky which unfortunately did not possess an official municipal license was caught OUTSIDE the owner’s compound, ie it was in a place where it should NOT have been without its handler and had even allegedly bitten a child in the neighbourhood.
One commenter therefore saw this whole affair as an exercise in blame shifting whereby it was the owner who was negligent in letting the canine loose outside the compound.
Echoing this sentiment, some commenters put the blame squarely on the owner’s shoulders for allowing the dog to be outside the premises on its own.
One maintained that he is against animal cruelty and that the person accused of beating the dog to death should also face the music but the irresponsible owner had to shoulder most of the blame.
There were also those who contested the chain of events with some claiming the unfortunate animal was killed not by the dog-catcher but the actions of a belligerent owner who tugged too tightly on the noose in an attempt to free it.
It was also pointed out that a dozen other strays were captured without incident and later humanely put down.
While public sentiment has been one of shock over the killing of Rocky in such a brutal manner, the comments above highlight that it is not quite so black and white.
For starters, there are those who feel dog owners are complicit in this problem by letting their pets roam free unguarded. This entire issue would have been avoided if Rocky was only ever let out on a leash.
Secondly, there are conflicting accounts that claim the owner did not help matters by tugging at the noose which contributed to the poor animal’s demise.
Thirdly, race-baiting comments are highly unwelcome. Animal cruelty and pet ownership have nothing to do with a person’s ethnicity. Perhaps the authorities should throw the book at those that seek to turn this into a 3R (race, religion and royalty) issue.
In the meantime, the public awaits the outcome of local authority the Klang Royal City Council’s (MBDK) investigations though many are convinced it will come to nought. – Aug 1, 2026
