Top Glove: Workers’ grouses being addressed, admits hiccups

WE are doing our best to remedy whatever grouses our migrant workers have in terms of welfare, in order to provide the best we can.

“With that, we are rectifying several issues such as late arrivals of buses with the transporter, with immediate urgency.

“The company assures that no disciplinary action will be taken against its workers due to the buses running late.

“We’re also looking into complaints of lack of mosquito nets and insufficient fans at the Westlite Hostel,” said Top Glove Corp Bhd in a statement to FocusM.

Three days ago, FocusM reported that migrant workers at Top Glove are mulling a boycott from work move, claiming the management was not taking their grouses seriously despite several discussions. (Read the story HERE)

Among their concerns were that they were forced to relocate to a place further away from workplace with little convenience stores nearby and unable to get proper meals.

As the current hostels were far, the workers complained that they often do not get enough rest as they have to get up early to wait for their transport buses.

To make matters worse, they also claimed that their transport buses are often tardy, resulting in them arriving late to work.

The glove maker also received brickbats for introducing a controversial attendance allowance system, which it later withdrew.

Shortcomings being addressed

Touching on the relocation of migrant workers, Top Glove said the former was briefed about the matter, adding the hostel meets the company’s requirements in terms of capacity and facilities.

“All workers were briefed prior to their relocation to Weslite Hostel through townhall sessions, memo and posters,” the world’s largest glove maker pointed out.

It added the company had also established a canteen for workers to have their meals with complimentary food provided at its expense.

“And in the coming weeks, provision shops, barbershop, automated teller machines, and a self-manned laundromat will be put in place for the convenience of the workers,” said Top Glove.

On that note, the glove maker admitted that there may have been some shortcomings during the transition period and appreciated the patience and understanding of all its stakeholders.

“Top Glove is humbled to inform FocusM that we’re working diligently to improve and enhance the living conditions, safety and health, and the well-being of our workers,” the glove maker added.

“To end, we hope FocusM provides Top Glove with the opportunity to clarify the points put forth, enabling your readers to have a transparent and impartial perspective of these matters.” – Dec 31, 2020.
