Agong: No need for Emergency

THERE is no need for a proclamation of Emergency as the government is already doing a good job in managing the COVID-19 pandemic, according to Yang di-Pertuan Agong Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah.

“I have faith in the government of the day’s ability to implement policies and enforce laws to curb the spread of the pandemic.

“Therefore, I urge politicians to stop creating issues which could destabilise the Government,” the King said in a statement issued by Comptroller of the Royal Household Datuk Ahmad Fadil Shamsuddin.

On Friday, Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin called for a special Cabinet meeting at Seri Perdana. It was speculated the former was looking into declaring an Emergency due to the ongoing pandemic.

However, critics have said that Muhyiddin was looking at the ‘nuclear option’ as it was rumoured that his political adversaries may be looking at dislodging his government by voting down Budget 2021 which is scheduled for tabling on Nov 6.

In a special meeting with the Conference of Rulers today, Sultan Abdullah said Muhyiddin proposed for the former to proclaim an Emergency under Article 150 (1), Emergency Ordinance (Special Measures 2020) and Article 150 (2B) to curb the spike of COVID-19 cases in Malaysia.

However, the monarch said after scrutinising the proposals with other Malay Rulers, they concluded that an Emergency proclamation was unnecessary.

Stop destabilising the govt

On that note, Sultan Abdullah also reminded politicians not to engage in irresponsible behaviour to create instability which could jeopardise efforts to stem the COVID-19 pandemic.

“I would like to stress that the upcoming Budget 2021 is important as it will include measures to curb the pandemic and revive our economy.

“The allocations which will be made under the budget is vital for our frontliners to carry out their responsibility effectively,” he said.

Sultan Abdullah then urged Malaysians to work hand-in-hand and support the government’s measures to eradicate the pandemic from the country.

“Please pray with me so that Malaysia will be free of COVID-19 as soon as possible,” he said.

Following the Agong’s decree, Muhyiddin has called all state Menteris Besar and Chief Ministers for a special meeting in Putrajaya tomorrow.

The Malaysian Insight reported that the prime minister called for the meeting right after the Conference of Rulers ended their session.
