Former Bursa Malaysia CEO Yusli passes away at 63

FORMER executive director/CEO of the Bursa Malaysia Bhd Datuk Yusli Mohamed Yusoff breathed his last this afternoon. He was 63.

A fierce champion of corporate governance, the president of the Malaysian Institute of Corporate Governance (MICG) since June 2015 is believed to have succumbed to a recurrence of cancer.

Sources told FocusM that Yusli’s funeral would be held be at Masjid Bukit Damansara this afternoon.

He was most recently appointed as KPJ Healthcare Bhd’s non-executive chairman effective Feb 18, 2020 following the resignation of Datuk Kamaruzzaman Abu Kassim who stepped down on Jan 15 that year. He also held directorships in listed FGV Holdings Bhd, Westports Holdings Bhd, AirAsia X Bhd and Mudajaya Group Bhd.

A former pupil of Victoria Institution Kuala Lumpur, Yusli is an economics graduate from the University of Essex, England and a member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants England & Wales (ICAEW) as well as the Malaysian Institute of Accountants (MIA).

All his life, he has served in leadership positions in companies involved in the capital and financial markets as well as infrastructure and property development. He also served as the Patron of the Victoria Institution Old Boys Association.

From 2004 to 2011, he was the head honcho of Bursa Malaysia. During that period of time, he also sat on the Board of the Capital Market Development Fund (CMDF) and was an executive committee member of the Financial Reporting Foundation of Malaysia. He was succeeded by Datuk Seri Tajuddin Atan

Yusli commenced his professional career in 1981 as a trainee accountant with Peat Marwick Mitchell & Co in London.

He returned to Malaysia and held various key positions at industrial and financial groups in Kuala Lumpur which provided him with experience in a number of different industries, including property and infrastructure development, telecommunications, engineering and merchant banking.

He entered the stockbroking industry when he was appointed as the CEO of CIMB Securities Sdn Bhd from 2000 to 2004. He also served as chairman of the Association of Stockbroking Companies Malaysia from 2003 to 2004. – March 10, 2022
