Kuala Lumpur’s flash floods: Nature’s fury or man-made folly?

UNFAZED by the misery over chicken shortage and spiraling cost of living endured by urbanites in the Federal capital, nature has unleased further fury which has resulted in several major roads in the Klang Valley being inundated after a continuous downpour since this morning (Wednesday, May 25).

The Federal Territories Ministry identified the affected roads as Jalan Kuching, Jalan Segambut and Jalan Khidmat Usaha.

Kuala Lumpur City Council (DBKL) workers have been sent to the affected areas to assist motorists. “DBKL workers are ready and are present at several locations to ensure water flows smoothly and to assist with traffic,” the city council pointed out in a Facebook post this afternoon.

As there are also instances of water ponding along Jalan Ampang-Jalan Dang Wangi, the ministry reminded motorists to plan their trip and to drive carefully.

Meanwhile, the Kuala Lumpur police advised motorists that vehicles could still travel on some of the roads that were not too badly affected.

These include Jalan Ipoh, Jalan Rahmat, Jalan Ampang, Jalan Dang Wangi, Jalan Sultan Azlan Shah, Jalan Imbi towards Jalan Sultan Ismail, Jalan Duta Mas, Jalan Kampar off Jalan Sentul, Dato Onn’ roundabout and Kampung Periuk.

However, by 2pm, the police updated that most of the affected roads have been re-opened for traffic as flood water has subsided while there was no damage reported.

Meanwhile, the Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) had tweeted a warning at 9.55am today that the bad weather was expected to last until 1pm.

The tweet indicated that the whole of Selangor, Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya would be affected.

Similar weather is also forecast in Melaka and several areas in Negri Sembilan such as Seremban, Port Dickson and Rembau. – May 25, 2022
