THE prisons department said it is in collaboration with the Ministry of Science, Technology, and Innovation (MOSTI) to develop an Anti-Drone System and local interception technology that will be expanded across all prison institutions in the country.
“The department has identified at-risk prison institutions, including Tapah Prison, which recently gained attention due to an attempted drug smuggling incident using a drone yesterday afternoon,” the Prison Department said in a statement.
The statement added that the department is continuously on alert, and at-risk institutions, including Tapah Prison, have been equipped with Anti-Drone Systems and interception equipment to prevent such incidents.
Yesterday, the police detected an attempt to smuggle items, believed to be drugs, into Tapah Prison using a drone.
Perak Police Chief Datuk Azizi Mat Aris said that the Tapah District Police Headquarters received a report about the incident around 5 p.m. from a prison staff member.
Authorities thwarted the attempt to smuggle the dangerous substances into the prison. The incident was discovered by a prison staff member who spotted the drone on the roof of a prison block.
Upon further inspection, police found a laundry bag attached to the white drone, containing three clear plastic packets suspected to be heroin and methamphetamine, weighing 122 grams and 12.9 grams respectively. – Aug 11, 2024
