Suspect in Nilai IED explosion arrested with more devices, hospitalised for burns

IN A dramatic breakthrough, police have arrested the prime suspect behind the December 22 improvised explosive device (IED) blast in Desa Palma, Nilai, after discovering several suspected IEDs on him during the apprehension.

Negeri Sembilan police chief Datuk Alzafny Ahmad announced that the 62-year-old man, identified as Yeoh Hock Sun, also known as ‘Ayang’, was nabbed along a road in the Batang Benar area yesterday afternoon following crucial public tips.

“A body inspection found burn injuries on his face, body, hands and legs. At the time of arrest, he was in a weakened condition before being taken to Tuanku Ja’afar Hospital for treatment,” Alzafny said in a statement.

Police also seized a motorcycle believed used by the suspect. Earlier raids on his rented house, turned makeshift laboratory, uncovered 31 additional IEDs, all safely destroyed by bomb disposal experts.

Alzafny praised public cooperation, stating the arrest stemmed from information provided by citizens. He advised against speculation while urging continued tips to authorities.

Previously classified as “dangerous and highly wanted”, Yeoh possesses specialised skills in explosives, likely from his background in pharmaceuticals and IT.

“Investigations suggest the suspect has a background in chemistry and IT, which may have contributed to his technical expertise in explosives,” Alzafny remarked.

“The devices found were highly sophisticated, indicating months of preparation. The IEDs contained nails and shredded folding knives, suggesting that they were designed for maximum impact,” he explained.

Authorities confirmed Yeoh acted alone, with no links to terrorism, and has a history of criminal intimidation. He had been estranged from family for over 30 years.

The case, involving scattered nails from the initial 7.08am blast, remains under investigation as relief sweeps Nilai. —Dec 28, 2025
