Kossan: 990 staff contracted COVID-19 at the Klang plant

KOSSAN Rubber Industries today announced that a whopping 990 COVID-19 cases have been detected at one of its premises in Klang, since it conducted massive screenings exercise on Dec 4.

“We have embarked on a corporate voluntary exercise by conducting mass screening programme, targetting more than 8,000 employees at all nine plants and three corporate premises.

“From the exercise, we detected 990 cases as of yesterday at one of our plant premises in the Klang district.

“Rest assured that we are cooperating with the Health Ministry and the local councils in our cohesive efforts in mitigating and containing the pandemic,” said Kossan Group Corporate Affairs & Communications chief Lim Poh Lin, in a statement.

Recently, it was reported that Kossan Rubber Industries Bhd did not notify public health authorities on COVID-19 outbreak among its workers. It only informed the matter to a group of analysts.

Subsequently, Minority Shareholder Watch Group chief executive officer Devanesan Evanson hit out at Kossan for holding back the information, saying such a move would have negative effect on stock prices.

Lim said that the affected premises is still under quarantine and will be closed until Dec 30 to contain the spread of the pandemic.

“Once again, we would like to assure all parties that we view the pandemic and public health situations seriously, and the health and safety of all our employees are of our utmost concern,” she said.

Recently, the Labour Department announced that it has opened 19 investigation papers against another glove maker, Top Glove Bhd on allegations of flouting the Workers’ Minimum Standards of Housing and Amenities Act 1990 (Act 446).

The company also landed in hot soup after one of its employees, Yam Narayan Chaudhray, a 29-year-old Nepali security guard died due to complications from COVID-19 On Dec 12. He was stationed at Top Glove’s 13th factory in Meru, Klang. – Dec 22, 2020.
