THE Kemaman parliamentary by-election kicked off today with the nomination of Malaysian Armed Forces General (RETD) Tan Sri Raja Mohamed Affandi Raja Mohamed Noor as the Barisan Nasional (BN) candidate, while PAS named Terengganu Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Samsuri Mokhtar as the candidate for Perikatan Nasional (PN) to defend the seat of Parliament.
The nomination took place at Dewan Berlian of the Kemaman Municipal Council. The duration of the candidate nomination process is one hour from 9am to 10am following which the eligible candidates are announced by the by-election returning officer Ahmad Farhan Abdul Wahab.
The Election Commission (EC) has fixed early voting on Nov 28 and polling day on Dec 2. There is a 14-day campaign period for the by-election that will begin today and last until 11.59 pm on Dec 1.
A total of 141,790 voters are expected to cast their ballots in the by-election, including 387 police personnel and nine military personnel.
The by-election is being called after the Terengganu Election Court nullified the victory of Che Alias Hamid of PAS, who won with 65,714 in the 15th General Election (GE15) last year.
He defeated BN Datuk Seri Ahmad Said (38,535 votes), Pakatan Harapan Hasuni Sudin (8,340 votes) and Pejuang Rosli Ab Ghani (506 votes). – Nov 18, 2023
