Many Malaysians have responded by showing support for the stall while some netizens have chided the PRESMA supremo for creating a furore out of a non-issue.

Malaysiakini had even quoted Penang mufti Wan Salim Mohd Noor as saying there was nothing wrong with the dish as long as the “non-halal” sign was displayed.

PRESMA’s attempt at culinary hegemony is, indeed, laughable bordering on the ridiculous. Issues have been compounded by a fallout with star players such as Jordan Sancho and a team not exhibiting the requisite quality. The fact that Ten Haag has been backed in the transfer market to the tune of £400 mil means he has nowhere to hide.

So it will be to his immense relief that the Red Devils managed to secure a precious win courtesy of an injury-time goal from skipper Bruno Fernandes. It did little to disguise another listless and toothless display from Manchester United and questions remain over Ten Haag’s suitability as manager of one of the biggest brands in world football but the win will ease the pressure a little for now.

Manchester City 6 v Bournemouth 1

The reigning champions are kicking into gear as they followed up the evisceration of Manchester United last weekend with another masterclass. This time it was Bournemouth on the receiving end and Andoni Iraola had no answer to the waves of attacks his side had to endure.

The gulf in class was there for all to see as six different scorers found the net for Manchester City but the main architect was winger Jeremy Doku. His direct running and wizardry caused all sorts of panic in the Bournemouth ranks. The Belgian netted one and managed four assists in this mauling which sends a clear signal to all rivals that City is very much focused on creating history with a fourth consecutive league title.

Sheffield United 2 v Wolverhampton Wanderers 1

Better late than never but The Blades pulled off a much-needed win courtesy of a penalty deep into added time. This comes after the Wolves had thought they secured a share of the spoils with an equaliser in the last minute of regulation time. However, a clumsy challenge by Fabio Silva saw The Blades awarded a late lifeline with a spot kick, dispatched by skipper Oliver Norwood via the underside of the bar.

With games against fellow relegation-threatened sides—Burnley, Luton and Bournemouth—looming on the horizon, Sheffield United supporters can be forgiven for feeling optimistic that a great escape could be on the cards.

Everton 1 v Brighton 1

A clash of styles here with Sean Dyche’s two banks of four went up against Roberto De Zerbi’s high-pressing game. The home side actually opened the scoring with a well-worked goal courtesy of Vitalii Mykolenko and then went on to frustrate the visitors. Brighton had the lion’s share of the possession but couldn’t find a way through Everton’s increasingly rigid and robust rear guard.

It took a late own goal from veteran Ashley Young to earn the Seagulls a point when he diverted Kaoru Mitoma’s cross past Jordan Pickford. Dyche though was the happier of the two managers believing the building blocks are there for Everton to start climbing the table.

Burnley 0 v Crystal Palace 2

Burnley set an unwanted record with a sixth consecutive home defeat to leave them mired in the relegation zone. Manager Vincent Kompany has complained that his side is not getting the rub of the green as Burnley’s performances have not been rewarded with points. But a home loss to a Crystal Palace side decimated by injury speaks volumes.

The Eagles have been in woeful form of late and presented Burnley with the opportunity to pick up some precious points. Instead, they allowed Roy Hodgson’s side to dictate proceedings and ultimately take all three points. The odds of a Burnley revival are looking grim and only the most foolhardy would back them avoiding the drop.

Newcastle 1 v Arsenal 0

Arsenal lost for the first time this season to a goal that their manager Mikael Arteta felt should not have stood. The fact that it required three lengthy VAR checks confirms that the decision to allow Anthony Gordon’s strike to stand would be hotly contested.

There were questions as to whether the ball had gone out of play, whether a foul was committed in the build-up, and whether the goal scorer was offside which meant that the Gunners would be aggrieved that the goal was considered valid.

Arsenal lost the title last season in no small part to controversial VAR decisions and Arteta will be seething at the perceived injustice. Newcastle are in sixth place after a resurgence in form and are also in the quarterfinals of the League Cup. Magpie fans are just loving life under Eddie Howe at the moment.

Brentford 3 v West Ham United 2

An utterly thrilling London derby that saw both sides take the lead. Both teams went for the jugular with attacking football in the first half, which would have thrilled all observing neutrals. The much maligned Neal Maupay scored his first goal in 35 appearances, which set the tone for a frantic first half of football. The Hammers were absolutely dominant in the first period and restored parity via a stunning goal from Mohamad Kudus.

The highly rated forward signed from Ajax is providing West Ham with a focal point upfront and was instrumental in the Hammers’ second goal, with his effort coming off the post before being slotted in by Jarod Bowen. But a woeful second half where West Ham sought to defend their lead saw them disintegrate and allow the home side to pick up all three points. – Nov 5, 2023

Main photo credit: The Guardian
EPL results at a glance
With more than one manager fighting for dear life, round 10 of fixtures in the English Premier League (EPL) took on extra significance. FocusM looks at some of the talking points from the upcoming games.

Fulham v Manchester United (Sat, 8.30pm)

Erik Ten Haag is under severe pressure as Manchester United (MU) have succumbed to consecutive 3-0 defeats at home. The first was the MU derby, where Pep Guardiola’s reigning champions made short work of the Red Devils. They followed that up with another insipid performance against Newcastle in the League Cup.

To say that Erik desperately needs a response from his team would be an understatement. The fact that MU look muddled and bereft of ideas is deeply concerning to their supporters, given the amount of money that has been spent on players. Odds are shortening on Erik keeping his job, especially if Fulham pull off a win.

Brentford v West Ham United (Sat, 11pm)

Since being promoted to the top flight, Brentford have won all four meetings against The Hammers. West Ham secured a morale-boosting victory against high-flying Arsenal in the League Cup in midweek but found their league form stuttering. David Moyes’ side has collected just four points from their last six games and will need to start picking up more wins if they hope to qualify for Europe via their league position.

Given that their fans have become quite used to European jaunts in recent seasons, West Ham will not want to leave qualification to the lottery of a cup win.

Burnley v Crystal Palace (Sat, 11pm)

Burnley have lost all five of their home games thus far with Turf Moor no longer looking like that difficult away fixture of yore. Despite the poor points tally, manager Vincent Kompany still retains the backing of the Burnley board but the wins must come sooner rather than later.

Crystal Palace are facing a lengthy injury list and can look staid at times with Roy Hodgson prioritising defensive solidity over attacking nous. Both sides desperately need a good result but this has stalemate written all over it.

Everton v Brighton & Hove Albion (Sat, 10pm)

Last season, Everton surprisingly routed the Seagulls 5-1. A repeat is highly unlikely but the Seagulls badly need a turnaround as they are winless in four games. Roberto De Zerbi’s high-pressing game means Brighton are hugely entertaining to watch but are also susceptible to counterattacks.

The misfiring forward line will be of concern to him and the loss of Alexis Mac Allister and Moises Caicedo during the summer transfer window is also beginning to show. Sean Dyche will be hoping to gain some momentum after putting together some decent performances.

Manchester City v Bournemouth (Sat, 11pm)

Andoni Iraola recorded his first victory as Bournemouth manager last weekend, but hopes of making it back-to-back wins are slim as they visit the reigning champions. Manchester City were imperious in the manner in which they dismantled and ultimately humbled their neighbours, MU, in the derby last week.

The second-half performance was possibly their best thus far this season and that is bad news for a Bournemouth side hovering dangerously above the drop zone. A thrashing could very well be on the cards if the Cherries are unable to keep City’s goal machine, Erling Haaland, quiet.

Sheffield United v Wolverhampton Wanderers (Sat, 11pm)

Paul Heckingbottom (Photo credit: Isaac Parkin)[/caption]

Sheffield United prop up the table by virtue of having lost nine of their last 10 Premier League fixtures. Unsurprisingly, manager Paul Heckingbottom is the favourite for the chop after a 5-0 drubbing at the hands of the Gunners last weekend. Another reverse will surely seal his fate, which is a shame as he rescued The Blades from the depths of the third tier and brought them back up to the top flight.

Former Sheffield manager Chris Wilder is being touted as a replacement, but with the squad lacking the necessary quality, it is hard to see anybody being able to save them from the drop.

Newcastle United v Arsenal (Sun, 1.30am)

Fresh from humbling MU on their own patch in midweek in the League Cup, the Geordies will be full of confidence. Despite a lengthy injury list, Eddie Howe has managed to keep Newcastle alive on four fronts.

The visit of Arsenal will prove to be a tough test of their top four credentials as Mikael Arteta looks to put together a string of wins to pile pressure on bitter North London rivals, Tottenham Hotspurs, who top the table. Viewers tuning in can expect an open and entertaining game with the promise of lots of goals.

Nottingham Forest v Aston Villa (Sun, 9pm)

Forest sits 16th in the table after drawing four and losing twice in their last six games. Manager Steve Cooper retains the backing of the board and the Forest faithful absolutely adore him for taking a side mired in relegation in the Championship to the top flight. However, the threat of the drop makes people do strange things, and Cooper would not be immune to the sack if Forest did not improve on their form.

On the polar opposite side is Unai Emery who has rejuvenated Aston Villa and made them genuine contenders for a Champions League spot. Some bookmakers have him among the early favourites for the Old Trafford hot seat if Erik is given the boot.

Luton Town v Liverpool (Mon, 12.30am)

Luis Diaz has returned to training this week despite having to deal with the on-going trauma of his parents’ kidnapping in Colombia. While his mother has been found, his father remains captive. Given the difficult circumstances, Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has said that it is entirely up to Diaz if he wishes to make himself available for selection.

Klopp can still count on Diogo Jota, Cody Gapko, Darwin Nunez and Mo Salah to fill the forward line. Nunez will be raring for a start after a fine display and a world-class goal helped sink Bournemouth in the League Cup midweek. Luton, meanwhile, are still looking to register their first home win of the season.

Tottenham Hotspurs v Chelsea (Tues, 4am)

While Mauricio Pochettino is widely respected and admired for his time at Spurs, there will be little time for sentiment as the North London side looks to cement their place at the top of the table. The Lilywhites are in blistering form despite losing talisman Harry Kane to Bayern Munich in the summer.

New manager Ange Postecoglou has instilled belief in the side as fans saviour a return to the swashbuckling football that Spurs used to be associated with. Chelsea are facing mounting issues, as the recent home loss to Brentford highlighted and Pochettino will be pleased if he can get away with a point against his old side. – Nov 4, 2023

Main photo credit: Vincent Kompany's Facebook
EPL fixtures at a glance
EPL fans anticipate this weekend's fixtures with excitement, as high-profile managers face increasing pressure amid underperforming teams and significant transfer investments. Visitors are immediately drawn to the appetising smell of crushed tomatoes, sweet basil and olive oil on heated pans.

Upon entering, I was comforted by the warm golden glow radiating from the neon lights that made artistic scrawls above the place. Timeless wood furnishing meets contemporary plush sofas, accompanied by comfortably designed chairs with circular armrests.

What's most compelling about Valentina Cucina E Bar is the fact that it is run by an Italian chef, born and bred in northern Italy. Head chef Michele Staurenghi duly emerged from the kitchen, the glorious aroma of spice clinging to his dark shirt like perfume. He wore an exotic smile on his face, his handshake as firm as his grip over the frying pan.

At first glance, 50-year-old Michele appears to be new in Malaysia, his pale skin yet to be tanned by our fiery tropical sun. His eyes shone when I prompted him to recount the journey that brought him to Malaysian shores.

“I’ve never been here. I’ve always wanted to be involved in Asian cuisine and see how its flavours match Mediterranean cuisine. I refine my recipes according to the local tastes,” said Michele with a charming Italian accent.

Valentina’s signature dishes include saffron risotto with gorgonzola cheese and stewed octopus, also known as Polpo alla Luciana. Where dessert is concerned, Michele recommended the Tiramisu which is based on the original recipe.

He prepares meals themed around his expertise and passion for Mediterranean cuisine, which is a fusion of Greek, Italian and North African.

“Italian is the heart of Mediterranean cuisine. I try to stay close to that but of course I have contamination as I have been in Greece as well. So most of the time I use some Greek ingredients to enhance the flavour of the dish and to give it an international taste because kitchen is always a matter of taste,” said the chef who has nearly three decades of experience in the kitchen.

While we discussed the finer points of Italian food, the smell of fried basil pervaded the air. The kitchen continued to churn out pasta and pizza, manned by a crew of local chefs who no doubt were touched by his culinary expertise.

Acting on instinct, he beckoned for me to join him in the kitchen where all the action was.

“Kitchen is not a one-man show. You cannot do it alone. It is always a matter of cooperation. We build the recipe together.

"Of course then I refine the recipe myself. I give the final touch. I give the final taste to the recipe myself according to my experiences and my personal taste but the menu is something we create together with the Cinnamon group, per my staff in the kitchen,” he noted.

Michele started busying himself, chopping garlic and adding olives to a pan. While he worked, he informed me that the ingredients were specially flown in from Italy to maintain their authenticity, hence the steep price.

“This is the first original Italian restaurant in Bukit Jalil and people should know the recipe is very close to the Italian one. Of course, we adapt the recipe to the local taste but, let's say that 95% of the recipe is close to Italy,” he further added.

He proceeded to massage an octopus appendage, informing me that he was making a Polpo alla Luciana for me. Tomato paste was added to the pan, and it was set to cook on a moderate flame.

The end result was a swirl of red, punctuated by glistening octopus tentacles and studded with capers. I stabbed at a chunk of meat, delighted to find it dripping with juice.

Michele’s masterpiece became apparent when a morsel was placed in the mouth. The flesh was exceedingly tender or as Michele describes it; smooth as a cloud.

This is unlike any other octopus meat I have eaten, which is usually chewy and retains the faint flavour of the marketplace. I swivelled a slice of bread in the rich sauce and took in the explosion of tastes which reminded me of the succulent bounties of the ocean.

Moreover, the already sumptuous meal was followed by Fettuccine al Nero di Seppia. It involves fettuccine coated in aromatic squid ink, accompanied by prawns and calamari bathed in marinara sauce.

My already pampered taste buds enjoyed another session of pampering with the Stracotto di Agnello. The Australian lamb shank is meticulously cooked for 24 hours in chianti wine, then generously served with creamy polenta, veggie caponata and rosemary juice.

Furthermore, I must admit that it is a far cry between writing and tasting. Hence, the one true way to experience Michele’s delectable delicacies is to journey to the top of Hyatt Place, Bukit Jalil, where the Valentina Cucina E Bar is located.

Here in the melting pot of culture that is Malaysia, it is easy for us to be overwhelmed by the many food choices but Michele through his talent has elevated the food of his people above them and better yet, he shines brightly in the middle of this crossroads of taste and tradition. – Nov 2, 2023
Italian cuisine couldn’t get more authentic than Valentina Cucina E Bar
Valentina Cucina E Bar, a culinary gem in Malaysia, entices with the aroma of authentic Italian cuisine. Teo Nie Ching (Pic credit: Bernama)[/caption]

“Furthermore, in organising concerts, PUSPAL (the Central Agency for Filming and Performance by Foreign Artistes) will ensure that the PUSPAL committee is stationed at the location (concert) together with PDRM (Royal Malaysia Police) and PBT (local authorities) to monitor the concert.”

This common sense move is to be applauded as it will allow foreign artistes to schedule concerts on the Malaysian shores rather than having a blanket ban as proposed by the more conservative elements.

British band The 1975 has inspired the adoption of kill switch at future concerts by foreign artistes in Malaysia[/caption]

It is felt that most foreign artistes will know how to behave themselves if their primary motivation is to entertain their fans as opposed to grandstanding posturing. For instance, the rock band Muse adjusted its set list during its recent KL gig by removing tunes with offensive titles.

Having foreign artistes perform here raises the profile of the country as a progressive nation and a desirable tourist destination.

This has a spill-over effect with hotels, FnB (food & beverage) outlets and cab drivers able to make some honest money from the tourist dollars. In current difficult times, everything must be done to help the working class make ends meet instead of pandering to the overly sensitive conservative faction.

Having these kill switches and overseeing committees at gigs are certainly preferable to having no concerts at all. – Nov 1, 2023

Main pic credit: Mixmag
Good idea to engage kill switch to halt show if foreign artistes cross boundaries during gigs
Remember British band The 1975 and its lead singer Matt Healey’s pucker on the lips with bassist Ross MacDonald during the Good Vibes festival in Kuala Lumpur in July this year?
CALL IT cheap publicity but this is just cultural misappropriation of the very worst kind. This centres on a topic that many Malaysians consider to be highly sensitive; no, it has nothing to do with the fanning of 3R (race, religion and royalty) sentiments but rather their favourite foods.

A Harian Metro report has stirred this hornet’s nest by highlighting a stall in Damansara purportedly selling perennial Malayisan favourites – nasi kandar and nasi lemak – with pork side dishes.

The stall was reviewed by a social media influencer and his video has cast the glare of unwanted attention from self-promoting types in the shape of PRESMA (the Malaysian Muslim Restaurant Owners Association) president Datuk Jawahar Ali Taib Khan.

Jawahar claimed that it is inappropriate for a dish that is normally associated with Muslim traders to feature non-halal ingredients. He further argues that this stall had tarnished the reputation of nasi kandar and has urged the authorities to take action.

[/video]

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Knoepzo8CGg

He further stated that officials from the National Unity Ministry has given advice on this issue and will be contacting the operator of the stall.

To say what exactly? Sorry, you can no longer sell non-halal nasi kandar and nasi lemak even though you have a sign clearly stating that the food is NON-HALAL?

What next? Calls to ban pork satay? Or pork rendang.

Just imagine the outcry if the scenario was reversed. What would happen if a Chinese Hawker Association demanded that Muslim traders stop selling halal yong tau foo and dim sum because these recipes traditionally feature pork as an ingredient, thus contravening centuries old traditions?

If anything, the National Unity Ministry should be giving both Harian Metro and Jawahar a ticking off for causing further schisms in society.

This is a thinly veiled attack on cultural diversity. Jawahar’s assertion that nasi kandar is usually “clean” food and insinuating that this stall was filthy also reeks of misplaced assumptions.

Malaysians have been borrowing from each other’s culinary traditions for decades. From celebrated baba nyonya cuisine to the hodge podge of laksa that feature various culinary influences, it is something to be celebrated, not condemned.

If Jawahar’s logic is to be followed, then perhaps Muslim trades should stop selling beef curries since it is normally associated with South Indian Tamil cooking where majority of its Hindu diners do not consume the meat.

Yes, ridiculous, isn’t it. – Oct 31, 2023
Indian Muslim restaurateur head honcho: Promoting pork nasi kandar an insult to industry
A Harian Metro report has stirred this hornet’s nest by highlighting a stall in Damansara Jaya purportedly selling perennial Malayisan favourites – nasi kandar and nasi lemak – with pork side dishes. It is very possible that they are housed in premises that lack such basic facilities.

All too often, Malaysians seem to forget amidst all the ‘invasion of the pendatang’ hysteria that Malaysia treats its migrant workers very poorly.

Many illegal workers lack the proper documentation simply because their Malaysian bosses just want a shortcut to quick profits.

Malaysians also seem to forget that the nation’s economy is built on the blood, sweat and tears of migrant workers.
