Putrajaya wants Air Kelantan Sdn Bhd to settle its management and governance issues before more funds are given to resolve the state’s water supply problem. (Photo credit: Bernama)[/caption]

He cited insufficient allocation from the federal government as the main reason Kelantan has issues with clean water supply.

A week later, Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi announced a RM1 bil allocation for Kelantan to solve its water woes.

Later, on June 18, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim himself topped up another RM500 mil to make the fund allocation total RM1.5 bil.

In all fairness, the Kelantan state government should first prove itself to be a good steward of public funds before it starts to ask for more. A good steward is first faithful to the little that it has. After all, water is a state matter.

This is Anwar’s Madani government which seeks to fix the problems for the people of not only Kelantan but also the water woes in the states of Sabah and Kedah, yet the polemics coming out of PAS which controls both Kelantan and Kedah are anything but constructive.

In a recent report, former Kelantan lawmaker Datuk Husam Musa disputed Nik Amar’s claim that after Umno lost the general election in 1990, it cancelled a RM600 mil Kelantan water supply project. Nik Amar had blamed the Kelantan water woes on UMNO.

Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim with Menteri Besar Kelantan Datuk Ahmad Yakob[/caption]

However, Husam who is also chairman of non-governmental organisation Save Kelantan said the then finance minister Tun Daim Zainuddin had handed a cheque of RM600 mil to the menteri besar to fix the people’s water woes.

For this reason, Anwar too is apparently irked by the state that Kelantan is in. His view is that he wants Kelantan to solve its water problems urgently instead of waiting another 60 or 100 years.

"Over 60 years of independence, endless political issues are only burdening the people," he lamented, citing the reason why he had a meeting with Kelantan Menteri Besar Datuk Ahmad Yakob during a Madani Raya Open House in Kelantan recently.

Kelantanese, therefore, should lay down the hatchets and work together with the Madani government to re-build the nation and revive its economy instead of playing on the polemics of race, religion and royalty.

What Anwar wants is a solution. "That is why I am urging (for a solution). The stand taken by the unity government is that we will find the funds, find a solution," he was quoted saying. "However, it has to be done through appropriate methods and with full cooperation from the state government."

Kelantanese cannot help but remember Boney M’s popular song, By the rivers of Babylon when they now sit down and weep over the rivers of Kelantan which have been turned muddy due to unsustainable logging in the state. – June 28, 2023
Time for Kelantanese to make some honest reflection
When Jenny Ngiam and her family visited Kelantan recently, they were happy to get a room at Grand Riverview Hotel just beside Kelantan River.

What we have today is Istanbul.

Artist impression of the ancient city of Constantinople (Photo credit: The Collector)[/caption]

On June 25, Malay daily Harian Metro quoted Sanusi telling his supporters that Penang must be reclaimed the way Muhammad al-Fateh conquered Constantinople from the Byzantine Empire.

Sanusi used this analogy on Saturday night (Jun 24) during his speech at the Kedah Berselawat assembly to highlight the need for Penang to be reclaimed to "restore Kedah’s glory" so that Kedahans will no longer be oppressed and looked down upon.

Not satisfied, the Jeneri state assemblyman took another pot shot at Guan Eng by recalling the time when the former Penang chief minister metaphorise himself as Caliph Umar Abd Aziz.

At that time, Sanusi noted that nobody said the matter was wrong even though the caliph was a Muslim.

"Caliph Umar Abd Aziz was the grandson of Saidina Umar Al-Khatab who was known to be very fierce.

FORMER premier Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad will meet with Bersatu president Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin soon to discuss the Malay Proclamation.

"I would like to meet him to explain the purpose of the Malay Proclamation. The proclamation is not in support of any particular body but the support of the Malays as a whole," said Dr Mahathir at a press conference after returning from his 13-day trip abroad to Europe and Turkiye on Wednesday (June 28).

The former Langkawi MP was responding to a news report quoting Muhyiddin saying he hoped to meet Dr Mahathir before Hari Raya Haji to discuss the Malay Proclamation.

Muhyiddin, who is also a former prime minister stated that Bersatu shared similar goals with the Malay Proclamation in uniting the Malay community in the country.

Dr Mahathir penned the 12-point Malay Proclamation and has been instrumental in promoting it.

Moreover, several notable individuals including PAS president Tan Sri Abdul Hadi Awang, Bersatu deputy president Datuk Seri Ahmad Faizal Azumu and Bersatu information chief Datuk Razali Idris signed the Malay Proclamation in their personal capacities.

Meanwhile, earlier on June 2, Dr Mahathir was reportedly questioned by Bukit Aman for activities detrimental to parliamentary democracy related to the Malay Proclamation campaign.

According to news portal The Star, the investigations were for allegedly insulting the royal institution.

Furthermore, Dr Mahathir had previously clarified that the Malay Proclamation was not anti-Malay.

Simultaneously, Dr Mahathir questioned Malaysian United Democratic Alliance's (Muda) decision to go it alone as a "third force" in the state elections.

"If you go solo and stand in the election in a few seats, what can you do with a few seats. Parties that contest in the polls would field sufficient candidates who can win and for the government," he added.

Muda president Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman stated that the Muda campaign would be primarily conducted online, with limited ground canvassing.

The youth-based party had applied to join Pakatan Harapan in September 2022 but did not receive any response. – June 28, 2023

Main photo credit: Reuters
Tun M looking forward to meet Muhyiddin to discuss Malay Proclamation agenda
Former premier Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad will meet with Bersatu president Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin soon to discuss the Malay Proclamation.

A PERIKATAN Nasional (PN) MP has urged Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim to stop making condescending remarks about women, which can foster normalisation among most men.

Kepala Batas lawmaker Siti Mastura Muhammad said the Tambun MP should portray a respectable character to the people regardless of age and background.

"The normalisation has already taken place in social media comment sections (with people) defending the prime minister and continuing indecent jokes towards women," she penned in a Facebook post.

Last Saturday (June 24), Anwar attended a town hall meeting in Nilai when he responded to a question from a Form Six student by praising her for being articulate and joked that if he had been younger, he would have asked for her phone number.

The Pakatan Harapan chairperson's words sparked criticism from various quarters, with some calling them "sexist and demeaning" to women, according to news portal Malaysiakini.

Bersatu legal and constitution bureau deputy chairperson Sasha Lyna Abdul Latif and Muda deputy president Amira Aisya Abdul Aziz have both demanded that Anwar apologise for his remarks.

According to Siti Mastura, both men and women should feel safe when voicing their concerns to the prime minister.

"Anwar seems to have gone too far with his reformist character after becoming prime minister.
